NFL-Profi Johnson: Wette verloren, Haare noch rot

The New York Giants have made a crucial roster move ahead of the regular season, upgrading tight end/fullback Jakob Johnson to their 53-man roster. After the final cutdown day, Johnson was added to the practice squad and Austin Schlottmann, the backup offensive lineman, was placed on injured reserve.

Head coach Brian Daboll announced the change, noting the importance of Johnson’s versatility and expertise in the Giants’ offensive plans. Johnson, a former star player for the Tennessee Vols, provides significant knowledge from his time spent with the Las Vegas Raiders and New England Patriots.

Johnson’s promotion is a result of both his diligence and his familiarity with important Giants coaching personnel. This choice involved Johnson’s former teammates on the Patriots and Raiders, Carmen Bricillo, the offensive line coach for the Giants.

Johnson played in 37 games and made 20 starts during his three seasons (2019–2022) with the Patriots. His two seasons with the Raiders came after his experience in New England laid the groundwork for his NFL career. Johnson, who was signed by the Giants on August 17, was added to the team’s tight end/fullback depth after tight end Tyree Jackson was placed on waivers or declared injured.

The veteran player, who has played in 67 NFL games with 34 starts over the course of five seasons, has made a swift transition with his elevation to the active roster.

Johnson’s move is made more seamless by his knowledge with the offensive methods and players of the Giants, particularly offensive linemen Greg Van Roten and Jermaine Eluemunor. The coaching staff will be keenly observing Johnson’s ability to contribute as a blocker and a receiving option as the Giants get ready for the regular season.

Johnson’s promotion highlights the Giants’ emphasis on preserving depth and roster flexibility, particularly at critical offensive positions. The organization anticipates that Johnson’s versatility and expertise will be a great asset throughout the season as he moves into the active squad.
