Breaking news: Mariners starting lineup looking healthy as favorite star returns.
The Mariners will have all of their position players on the roster going into their 10-game, three-city road trip that begins in Anaheim on Friday. Another will be added over the weekend.
Shortstop J.P. Crawford was activated from the injured list (fractured pinkie) and moved to the top of the batting order prior to Wednesday afternoon’s 6-2 series finale victory against the Rays.
Following Tuesday night’s game, outfielder Dominic Canzone was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma in order to create space for Crawford.
After working a two-out walk off lefty Tyler Alexander, Crawford went 0-for-3 in the game, setting the stage for Julio Rodriguez to come up and hit a two-run home run, increasing Seattle’s advantage to 5-1.
Crawford took part in simulated games against minor league pitchers at T-Mobile Park on Monday, when all minor league clubs were off, and again on Tuesday, when Tacoma and Class A Everett were both on the road, following his participation in rehab games in Tacoma on Saturday and Sunday.
“We brought in some guys to throw him some at live at-bats and he was able to get some ABs here,” manager Dan Wilson stated at the media briefing on Wednesday before the game. “Over those few days, he made quite quick improvement. I believe he is eager to leave and eager to return there. Everyone thought the at-bats here were good. It will be wonderful to have him back in the starting lineup.
Crawford was put back in as the leadoff hitter despite his poor performance this season (.204/.299/.347 slash line in 77 games) and Victor Robles’ productive tenure with the Mariners. After being pushed to the ninth spot in the order, Robles went 2-for-3 in the fifth inning, including a two-run home run and a swinging bunt single.
“That’s where he’s been in our lineup,” Wilson explained when explaining why Crawford was ranked first in the lineup. “I think we need him back because he’s got such leadership with our guys and having him back in a familiar spot in the lineup as well.”
With so many platoon players on the roster, the lineup might change every day, much like it did during the previous Scott Servais administration.
Wilson did find it appealing to bat Robles and Crawford consecutively in some circumstances.
Wilson remarked, “You saw it today where Robles hits the home run, J.P. works the walk, and Julio hits the home run.” That is a total of four rapid runs. And when you can pull that off, that’s a really good offense. It’s what those two guys can do, either by starting the inning or by driving in runs. And I thought those two guys looked extremely good today.
Rather than send infielder Leo Rivas, who has become a fan favorite, to Tacoma, the Mariners chose to send Canzone. Rivas will be used as a pinch-hitter and utility infielder. With Robles, Rodriguez, Randy Arozarena, Mitch Hanger, and Luke Raley—who also splits time at first base with Justin Turner—Seattle has five outfield players.
