Breaking: Jets four-time Pro Bowler signs a mega deal with Cowboys.
The sudden and uncharacteristic aggressiveness the Dallas Cowboys have shown over the previous several weeks hasn’t stopped shocking us. In an attempt to compete for a position, they have brought a four-time Pro Bowl running back into the room.
The longtime Minnesota Viking and one-year player for the New York Jets, Dalvin Cook, has now signed a deal to play with the Cowboys. Since before the 2023 season concluded, there have been rumors that Cook would go to Dallas.
Cook is headed to Arlington to sign a deal that will place a star on his helmet for the 2024 season, but it took the entire offseason to get there. Cook has joined the ranks of the recently signed defensive tackles, Carl Lawson, Jordan Phillips, and Linval Joseph.
It seems to me that this indicates they are not entirely confident in the running backs that are currently on the roster. Hunter Luepke, fullback, Deuce Vaughn, Rico Dowdle, and Ezekiel Elliott are listed in order of depth chart position.
Not exactly a murderer’s row of skill in the backfield, and Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t carried the ball in practice outside of team drills. While explosive, Dowdle doesn’t fundamentally alter the game. Vaughn is elusive, but he’s too small to be of any use.
Cook offers experience with more than 1,400 career carries, but how much is left in the tank? With more than 2,000 carries, the running back the Cowboys have now is seasoned. In just one additional season in the league, Elliott has nearly 700 more carries than Cook.
It is likely that Mike McCarthy and his team believe Cook can improve the caliber of play in the running back room and bring back some of the magic from his time in Minnesota.
In the first place, it means he will have another opportunity to display the skill that got him four Pro Bowl selections while he was a Viking. Cook was chosen for four straight Pro Bowls in the years 2019–2023.
At the time, he was regarded as one of the NFL’s finest running backs, averaging 4.7 yards per carry while scoring 43 touchdowns and surpassing 1,100 yards rushing annually.
He is/was one of the top receiving backs in all of football in addition to being able to carry the ball. Every year, just ask my fantasy teams.
