Despite Mike Tomlin’s failure to choose a starter, it appears that Russell Wilson has the upper hand.

The Pittsburgh Steelers fell to the Detroit Lions 24–17 on Saturday to end their preseason. When they return to action, it will be on the road for their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Though he is not ready to proclaim a winner in the quarterback competition between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, head coach Mike Tomlin will announce his starting quarterback well in advance of that game.

Wilson appears to have a good chance of receiving the nod from the veteran Steelers head coach at this stage. The Steelers signed both Wilson and Fields over the summer, with Tomlin stating that Wilson would start and Fields as the backup. Nothing that occurred throughout training camp would cause that assessment to change.

Before the end of the following week, Tomlin is probably going to announce his starting quarterback, according to ESPN.com beat writer Brooke Pryor.

In the season finale versus the Lions, both quarterbacks led touchdown drives. But the squad rallied magnificently behind Wilson, who guided a five-play, 60-yard drive that ended with Cordarrelle Patterson scoring a 31-yard touchdown run.

Wilson completed both of his passes for 26 yards on that drive. He just got one drive in the entire game, but it was enough to demonstrate his abilities to Tomlin and the coaching staff. On a third-and-11 play, he completed one pass for 32 yards to wide receiver George Pickens.

During his time in the game, Fields was also productive, completing three of four throws for forty yards. He also had two four-yard carries. Before Tomlin pulled the former Bears quarterback from the game against the Lions, he was behind center for three series.

The Steelers desired to see some activity from their starters.

Tomlin does not fall into the bracket of teams that rest their starters in the season finale out of concern for injury.

Given that he stated he intended to allow his starters get rid of rust before pulling them, he was undoubtedly not careless with their deployment. Wilson is probably going to be the team’s starting quarterback given that Fields was allowed to play for three series while Wilson was benched after one.

Despite their 0-3 preseason record, Wilson stated that the Steelers are confidence in their offensive capabilities.

Wilson told the media following the game, “We knew that we were able to do that,” according to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic. “OTAs, training camp, and everything else have been extremely fantastic. Finally, we set everything up in the field with lights.
