Quarterback Bo Nix Crushes NFL Debut For Denver Broncos: Five Oregon Ducks See Field

Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos are somewhat alike. Riding legendary quarterbacks, the two had considerable success during a large portion of the 2010s. For the Broncos, it was Peyton Manning, who signed with Denver in 2012 and won an MVP and a Super Bowl.

Payton, on the other hand, built his offense around Drew Brees with the New Orleans Saints , eventually earning the reputation of one of the game’s premier offensive minds.

While both Denver and Payton reached high heights during those years, they’ve struggled to recover relevance after the departure of their Hall of Fame quarterbacks.

As rookie Bo Nix is poised to make his regular-season debut after being designated the starter, it’s vital to grasp what’s at stake for Payton’s legacy.

Saying that Russell Wilson and Payton never made sense is not revisionist history. Wilson was a fantastic improviser in his heyday, exhibiting the greatest caliber of athleticism and inventiveness.

Unfortunately, Wilson was not nearly as talented as he was when he shined in the mid-2010s, and Payton inherited a very different Wilson in 2023.

Wilson’s ability as a playmaker had also reduced, but he lacked the abilities to reverse his physical deterioration. His short stature hindered his range of vision, and he had trouble throwing with rhythm. Payton lost patience with his quarterback and became agitated.

In summary, Payton desired to implement an offensive scheme in Denver that was akin to his New Orleans offense. The only issue was that Wilson embodied every quality that made Brees exceptional. Wilson was a passable player statistically, but it was evident from watching the games that he was leaving a lot of meat on the bone. Wilson was benched by Payton toward the end of the season, and he was later dismissed.
