In response, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said, “Nope,” following Friday night’s 24–24 draw at Allegiant Stadium with the Las Vegas Raiders.

And for that reason, why did Aiyuk hop on a plane Thursday afternoon and head to Vegas?

“Anyone who’s on our team, we want them to make the trip, especially if we think they’re healthy and stuff,” added Shanahan. “So, that’s why we had him do it.”

This season, Aiyuk has a $14.124 million deal with the 49ers. But that deal is much below his market value, so he’s not inclined to play on it.

Talks over a new deal between Aiyuk’s camp and the 49ers have been ongoing. Additionally, the 49ers have held trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots, to name at least three teams.

Shanahan stated he doesn’t think the team is distracted by Aiyuk’s presence. Aiyuk hasn’t practiced as part of his “hold in,” but he showed up on time for training camp to avoid fines. He has consistently attended meetings.

On Monday, September 9, the 49ers play the New York Jets in the first game of the regular season. Whether Aiyuk’s refusal to take part in the 49ers’ offseason program or training camp will have an impact on his performance this season is yet to be determined.

Although quarterback Brock Purdy hasn’t passed to Aiyuk this offseason, he thinks their solid on-field bond from the previous two seasons will quickly return.

“I’d be confident in us being about to pick up where we left off,” said Purdy. “I’ve been throwing to him for two years, and he’s obviously on his third now, so he knows our plays, our ideas, and where the receiver and he should be. I would have a good feeling that he would return and that we would both agree.”

For the previous two seasons, Aiyuk led the 49ers in both receptions and receiving yards. The previous season, he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven scores, earning him AP second-team All-Pro honors.
