Report: The Yankees’ trade acquisition is collapsing in front of us.

New York Yankees - The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league infielder Ben Cowles and

With two trade deadline acquisitions, the New York Yankees thought they had found a solution to their bullpen troubles, but since neither transaction has worked out as planned, the situation has only become worse. Two weeks after New York traded for Enyel De Los Santos, he was declared free agent, and Mark Leiter Jr. has had a difficult time adjusting to life away from the Chicago Cubs.

So far, Mark Leiter has had a great deal of difficulty with the Yankees.

With Leiter pitching with a one-run lead in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Yankees had another chance to seal the save after Clay Holmes blew it in the ninth inning on Sunday night against the Detroit Tigers. But Leiter did not record an out, and the Tigers won the series by walking off the Yankees.

Considering that Luke Weaver and Tommy Kahnle had perfect innings of relief and that Marcus Stroman threw six scoreless innings, it was a heartbreaking loss.

Leiter’s excellent swing-and-miss percentage made him a valuable member of the Yankees’ bullpen. He is still striking out batters (11.9 K/9) but he is also giving up runs at crucial times. Leiter has a 6.48 ERA and has given up two home runs in his 11 Yankees outings.

Leiter’s difficulties further shrink the Yankees bullpen.

The Yankees need the right-hander to pitch better because their bullpen is quite thin right now, as he has given up at least one earned run in three of his last four appearances. All season long, New York has been looking for ways to bolster their bullpen, and despite lofty hopes, Leiter has fallen far short of those expectations.

Leiter might start pitching in less high-leverage circumstances until he starts to turn things around because they would be depending on Weaver and Kahnle to finish the job late, and Michael Tonkin would probably see some high-leverage situations as well. Since Leiter’s splitter and curveball are his best pitches, the Yankees may also make a small adjustment to his pitching repertoire to have him throw fewer fastballs and more offspeed pitches.

Though the outcomes to date have been dismal and something needs to change sooner rather than later, there is still time for him to work things out and develop into a significant reliever going forward.
