Raiders waive QB Anthony Brown following rough preseason opener

The Las Vegas Raiders may be getting close to deciding who will start at quarterback in Week 1, but it looks like they have figured out who will be third on the depth chart. After signing with the team in January, Anthony Brown has been a member of the roster throughout the offseason. However, with the addition of Nathan Peterman to the roster, Brown was placed on notice. The Raiders made their decision quickly, waiving Brown on August 14.

The quarterback, who was only 26 years old, impressed coaches during training camp. Brown’s play didn’t look as good after the Raiders’ opening preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. He gained 24 yards by completing 1 of 3 throws. It’s telling that the Raiders didn’t believe in him enough to throw the ball farther.

Although it’s early in the season to assess what a backup player can accomplish, Las Vegas refused to allow Brown to throw more passes. It became evident that the Raiders were considering taking a different approach when Peterman was added.

Carter Bradley, an undrafted rookie quarterback, is still with the team, but it’s likely that he’s holding out for a spot on the practice squad when the season gets underway. This season, Peterman seems to be firmly established as the No. 3 quarterback.
