ESPN: Yankees favorite starting catcher set to resume training after long term injury.
After a brief rehab stint due to a quad injury, catcher Jose Trevino of the New York Yankees has returned from the 10-day Injured List.
After finishing a three-game series against the White Sox in Chicago, the Yankees will begin a series against the Tigers on Friday in Detroit. In that contest, manager Aaron Boone will be allowed to insert Trevino back into the starting lineup. The Yankees demoted Carlos Narvaez, their backup catcher, back to Triple A Scranton-Wilkes Barre as Trevino returned to the active roster.
Prior to the injury, Trevino and rookie Austin Wells shared time at catcher. However, given Wells’ current hot streak, Trevino is probably going to get less playing time when he returns. Trevino was slicing before going on the IL.244/.303/.411 with 22 runs scored, eight home runs, and 27 runs batted in.
Wells has frequently been the Yankees’ cleanup player. Wells, a 24-year-old, is cutting. He’s hitting 257/.347/.426 this season with nine home runs and thirty-six RBI. After playing just a small part for the team as a rookie, he is now in his second season with the Yankees.
In 2023, he hit a whopping.229/.257/.486 with four home runs and thirteen RBI. This year, he’s evidently grown more at ease in the Major Leagues, and Boone has demonstrated his belief in him as a hitter and in his ability to cover ground.
Wednesday’s 10-2 victory over the White Sox saw Wells go 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBI.
Trevino pounded up 11 home runs and 43 RBI in 115 games for the Bronx Bombers that season. His slash line was.248/.283/.388. Trevino has played more than 89 games in a season only once in his career. Before joining the Yankees in 2022, he played for the Texas Rangers for the first four seasons of his career.
First-place in the American League East, the Yankees are in a close race with the Baltimore Orioles for the top spot in the division. After a protracted midseason slump that saw them forfeit the significant edge they had built up during a stellar start to the season, the Yankees have won 12 of their last 17 games.
The offense of the Yankees appears to be finding its rhythm once more. In three of their previous four wins, they have scored eight runs or more. They defeated the White Sox 4-1 thanks to three home runs from outfielder Juan Soto in the one game they did not reach that level.
