Broncos Claim Ex-Giants DB Kaleb Hayes, Waive ILB Alec Mock

Kaleb Hayes, a defensive back, was selected by the Denver Broncos off waivers. The Broncos were able to add him to their roster of ninety men since he was just waived by the Giants. In order to create space on the roster for Hayes, the team released Alec Mock, an undrafted rookie linebacker in his second season with the Broncos. The team formally declared that they had claimed Hayes off waivers, confirming this roster change.

Before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Hayes was originally selected out of the draft in the NFL Draft. Despite being one of the final cuts from the Jags, he eventually signed on to the Giants practice squad, where he would play out the whole 2023 season. After being waived by the Giants over the weekend, Hayes is now a member of the Broncos, where he strengthens their secondary.

The 5-11, 194-pound cornerback was considered a developmental project by NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein due to his impressive testing results.

Hayes is far better suited to play near to his receiver early in the route because of his long arms and good play strength. He doesn’t have the instincts or short-area burst to play off the ball. His length and strength go well with his long speed, thus he could be able to press and trail in order to stay in close proximity to the wideout. Teams will be looking for ways to get more out of him than what we see on tape because of his exceptional athletic testing, but there is still more work to be done in terms of ball output.

In the midst of the Broncos’ opening-week preseason victory over the Colts, backup cornerback Art Green was undergoing a concussion evaluation. According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS Denver, Green is now undergoing an MRI on his head and neck region; hence, Hayes’ addition may be related to Green’s possible absence.

He is not a 53-man roster player overall, but he still has two preseason games and training camp workouts left to convince the Broncos that he should be on the practice squad. Demonstrate your ability to cover in the NFL and play special teams, and you’ll be around.
