ESPN: The Giant release two players and sign in Vikings favorite linebacker in a blockbuster deal.
The New York Giants made a few roster moves on Sunday afternoon following practice. With the second preseason game coming up next Saturday against the Houston Texans, the Giants are dealing with some injuries and need to replace a few roster spots. They released two competitors, defensive back Caleb Hayes and running back Jacob Saylors.
Hayes was formerly a Jacksonville Jaguars undrafted free agent in 2023. After putting up some impressive stats in 56 preseason snaps, the BYU product eventually signed a contract with the Giants this offseason.
Despite only playing 17 total snaps, he had a rough game against Detroit in the Giants’ opening preseason game. This past Thursday, on his one and only attempt, he picked up a missed tackle, which damaged his reputation and put the Giants in a difficult position.
Saylors, a former Cincinnati Bengals undrafted free agent who played mostly on special teams, was also cut by the Giants in addition to Hayes. Saylors was already in a tough situation because the Giants had an abundance of running backs.
The Giants signed Miami Hurricanes drafted agent K.J. Cloyd with one of the roster spots. Cloyd played 393 snaps last season, recording 11 pressures with 28 tackles for the Hurricanes. Although he hasn’t played in the preseason, the Giants needed a competitor after Dyontae Johnson was injured. Cloyd will have a chance to prove himself even though he hasn’t been to many parties.
With the injury to backup quarterback Drew Lock, the Giants could also consider bringing back Nathan Rourke, who was recently released from the Atlanta Falcons, as they start to trim the roster as well.
