Five rookies for the Eagles are poised to contribute right away.
We’ve made an effort to control our enthusiasm. That’s over and done with. Now, let’s discuss a few novices.
That was, indeed, interesting. How about that conclusion? In their inaugural preseason game, the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Baltimore Ravens. We’re ready to start a new week, but first, let’s speak about performances. Both young and old birds signed their names to this one. This week, we’ll have a lot to analyze.
For a moment, let’s talk about those young gentlemen. There was nothing more we could have wanted of Philly’s rookie class. The Birds added nine players in the NFL Draft, as you are aware. Nine others were added by them as undrafted free agents.
There were some placards that we found amusing. Some others pointed out that these guys were inexperienced. In general, we’ll award higher passing ratings since, without its first-year brilliance, Philly might not have prevailed.
Are we the only ones who think that some of these guys have the potential to make a significant impact at an early age in key roles?
Mitchell Quinyon
Yes, indeed! We were hoping to see something like this. Quinyon Mitchell began his career with the first team—or rather, the second squad to do so. You understand what we mean. Throughout the first quarter, he was on the field and didn’t appear to be uncomfortable.
Despite not being suited for the position, Philly’s first-round draft pick made some limited plays in the slot. In the outside corner, he also shot a few pictures.
You would never guess it? He nearly caught an interception, but given how well he performed in so many other areas, we can overlook the drop.
However, we would prefer that he catch the ball the next time.
Shipley, Will
The former standout player for Clemson was rather good. We had been complaining all summer about his pass protection, but on Friday night, he did everything else in addition to picking up a terrific blitz.
He gained hard yards in the space between the tackles. He returned to kickoffs after scoring as a receiver. Saaquon Barkley has a secure employment. Kenneth Gainwell’s is also, although we now feel differently about Will Shipley than we did a few of days ago.
Wilson Johnny
There’s something that comes to mind every time we consider Kellen Moore’s offense. It’s likely that the slot receiver must be a capable blocker, and it’s unclear if Parris Campbell or Britain Covey truly meet that need.
Now, Johnny Wilson did show off some good blocking. He also made a terrific seven-yard catch early on. He isn’t quite deserving of the WR3 position, but he continues to do well for himself. That’s really all you can ask for at this point in the game.
Trotter Jeremiah Jr.
As we watched someone running around the field with Trotter across its back and wearing a number 54 jersey, our hearts sang. This isn’t merely a case of nepotism bringing here a namesake. Expect to hear Junior’s name a few times this week following a six-tackle performance in which he recorded a sack. There’s something going on here.
This could be the beginning of some really strong performances.
