Breaking: Cubs signed in a seasoned reliever to Minor League in a blockbuster deal.

Lucas Luetge was signed by the Chicago Cubs to a minor-league contract on Wednesday, giving them even more pitching depth. The Boston Red Sox recently released the seasoned reliever. In 2023, he made his big-league debut with the Atlanta Braves.

After the Cubs signed Adrian Houser on Tuesday, Luetge is their most recent acquisition from the open market. The left-hander joins the team in 2024 after contributing significantly for Triple-A Worchester. Luetge will try to build on his 3.01 ERA from his time with the Red Sox’s affiliate by pitching for Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs could also go with a buy-low option by signing Luetge. It’s a triumph if they can get any output out of him.

The lefty enjoyed good seasons with the New York Yankees in 2021 and 2022 not too long ago. Prior to that, in 2012, he began his career with the Seattle Mariners.

The Cubs have discovered gems in the rough before. Tyson Miller and Jorge Lopez have strengthened their bullpen, which is a credit to the scouting department.

Seeing how many players the Cubs are adding to their roster is interesting. In his comeback to the major league squad, David Bote has been competent, but Christian Bethancourt has been outstanding in the mound.

The Cubs have a penchant for getting excellent output from an odd cast of characters, but they still need to invest in better players.
