Breaking: Giants’ top man ruled out due to injury.
Due to a hip injury, Giants backup quarterback Drew Lock left the preseason game against the Lions late in the first quarter. Hendon Hooker, a Detroit backup, sustained a concussion in the second half.
Lock, who signed with the Giants this offseason as a free agency, was injured with 2:03 left in the first quarter of New York’s 14-3 victory after he completed a deep ball to Isaiah McKenzie. Before he went to the sidelines, trainers took care of him.
Daniel Jones and the majority of the starting offense were replaced by Lock, who completed 4 of 10 throws for 17 yards before being sacked. It was not entirely clear when the damage happened.
On a fourth-down play, local favorite Tommy DeVito replaced Lock, but the Giants ultimately punted due to a delay of game penalty.
After the game, Lock said he didn’t think the injury was serious and that he could have played again if necessary.
After exiting the pocket to run, Hooker was hurt, according to Lions coach Dan Campbell. “That’s what happens when you run at quarterback in this league,” Campbell remarked. Before the incident, he commended Hooker for using his legs wisely.
Behind Jared Goff, who did not participate in the game, Hooker and Nate Sudfeld are vying for the backup position.
The Lions also lost defensive lineman David Bada to an Achilles tendon injury, offensive lineman Connor Galvin to a knee injury, and second-year receiver Antoine Green to a concussion. Galvin and Bada were carted off the field.
