Arizona Cardinals OT D.J. Humphries Won't Return This Season - Sports Illustrated Arizona Cardinals News, Analysis and More

The New York Jets may yet decide to sign D.J. Humphries before the regular season begins in order to add a top experienced free agent, even if they are currently in the middle of training camp.

The Jets could look to sign some of the cheap free agents that Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report listed. Top of the list was veteran offensive tackle Humphries, a well-known player. Tansey made a strong argument for the Jets to sign him.

Tansey stated, “The Jets do not have an immediate need at offensive tackle.” Nonetheless, it is prudent to keep an eye on the free-agent market in case any of the players on their roster suffer a catastrophic injury.Olu Fashanu, a first-round selection, can step in for a starting position in the event of an injury, but adding a veteran like D.J. Humphries would be beneficial in that situation.

Pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue and quarterback Trevor Siemian were two other players identified as possible targets.

D.J. Humphries’s Outstanding CV
Humphries has always been held in high regard. But over his football career, all he’s done is live up to the hype.

In high school, Humphries was a five-star recruit and the top offensive tackle in the class of 2012. In his first season with the Florida Gators, he was selected a Freshman All-American; but, throughout the next two years, injuries kept him on and off the field.

Despite this, Humphries was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He was a member of the team for nine seasons and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021. In 2022, the Cardinals even gave him a contract extension worth $66 million for three years.

Humphries, regrettably, did not live to see that deal through. Humphries became a free agent for the first time in his career when the Cardinals cut him this summer in an effort to save salary space.

Pro Football Focus reports that Humphries has never given up more than ten sacks in a single season. Despite being past his prime at thirty, he could still be a good veteran backup option for the Jets.

Most recent information on Olu Fashanu
The Jets selected a highly skilled offensive tackle in the current draft. When Olu Fashanu will take the field in the NFL is unknown, though.

Fashanu was a unanimous choice for the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2023 as an All-American. He was selected by the Jets 11th overall, making him a contender for the top 10. But even with the first-round billing, Tyron Smith, a seasoned veteran, is now ahead of Fashanu at left tackle in the depth chart.

If Smith is hurt, the Jets will probably insert Fashanu into the starting lineup. However, head coach Robert Saleh also stated that the first-round rookie’s long-term goal is to be able to back up at right tackle as well.

When reporters asked about Fashanu learning right tackle, Saleh said, “That’s coming.” But for now, we just need to figure out who we think he is and make sure he feels comfortable with it. After he reaches that point, we’ll start working with him in areas where we can move him up.

With their first-round pick, the Jets are exercising patience. That may be all Fashanu needs to become a player capable of playing in the Pro Bowl in the future.
