Report: Los Angeles Angels vs. New York Yankees: Yankees DJ LeMahieu warns Angels.
When the Angels visit town, the Yankees will attempt to continue their winning streak.
The Yankees won two out of three in a series against the Blue Jays over the weekend thanks to a walk-off single by DJ LeMahieu. They will now attempt to maintain that when the Angels visit Yankee Stadium for three games.
This season, things haven’t gone too smoothly for the Angels. Mike Trout has missed all but 29 games of this season due to injury, and it was recently revealed that he is done for the year. Prior to the season, Shohei Ohtani was lost in free agency. Not that they were supposed to contend in the first place, but that has resulted in a 49-63 record and a struggle to stay out of last place in the AL West with the Athletics. Although they certainly have talented and dangerous players, the Yankees have an opportunity to extend their current winning streak with a victory in this series.
Before the LA visit to the Bronx begins, let’s look at the anticipated starting pitching matchups for the upcoming two days.
Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. ET: Luis Gil vs. Davis Danie
Gil has appeared to be much more like the player he was in the early part of the season ever since speaking with Luis Severino. He struck out 33 batters in 27.1 innings, good for a 3.33 ERA and 3.39 FIP in July. Before going into a slump, he had one of his greatest starts of the season on May 29th against the Angels, pitching a career-high eight innings and striking out nine while giving up one run.
Despite making his Major League Baseball debut in 2023, Daniel has only thrown 34.1 innings in seven career appearances. This year, four of those excursions have been starts. Though he is coming off a strong outing against the Rockies, when he held them to one run in five innings, he hasn’t been great overall. Furthermore, the narrative that the Yankees struggle against pitchers they face for the first time is always a possibility.
Nestor Cortes vs. Carson Fulmer on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET
This season, Cortes’ home and road splits have generated a lot of discussion, but his most recent home start, on July 20th against the Rays, did not go well. On the other hand, his previous road start wasn’t too awful. Against a team he had one of his better road starts against this season—limiting LA to two runs in 5.1 innings ago on May 28—he will aim to recover from the Rays start.
For the most part of this season, Fulmer has been a reliable long relief pitcher for the Angels. But he’s been added to the rotation in recent weeks. Fulmer has made four starts this season, his first coming on July 14. He has a 3.43 ERA and has allowed batters to have an OPS of just.554. Even though he has been a major league pitcher for eight years, the Yankees have only seen him pitch in relief once, in 2020, while he was with the Orioles.
Tyler Anderson vs. Marcus Stroman on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET
When Stroman faced the Blue Jays last week, his difficulties persisted. Even though the home run ball didn’t hurt him this time, he was lifted after 2.2 innings and seven runs. He currently has a 6.21 FIP and a 6.32 ERA since the beginning of June.
This season, Anderson has been one of the Angels’ bright lights. According to Baseball Reference, he leads the team in WAR with a 3.05 ERA through 135.2 innings pitched. Anderson is 34 years old. That included a respectable performance in May against the Yankees. That day he walked six, yet in five innings the Yankees scored just one run off of him.
