It’s perhaps not all that unexpected that Monday’s joint practice between the New York Giants and the Detroit Lions ended with a bit too much chitchat.

The fact that Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was directly in the heart of a furious brawl involving the players from both teams is somewhat surprising, though.

Regretfully, the video’s angle isn’t the best, so it’s not evident whether any punches were sent. In any case, calmer heads won out in the end.

Players on both sides obviously brought the heat throughout the practice, as evidenced by the few fights that broke out.

When questioned by the media about the event, Jones, 27, quickly downplayed it. Rather, he concentrated on the team’s overall practice performance.

Jones stated, “I mean, you try to stand up for your guys when situations like that arise, but I thought it was a good competitive practice all day today” (via Nick Shook of NFL.com). “We performed well in a few plays, but there are certain elements we definitely need to strengthen up. But there was a healthy sense of competition and energy.

Jones added that the Giants were putting their skills to the test against a squad like Detroit, and that was a good thing.

“To feel better and more confident at the end of the day, I think that’s the goal every day you come out to practice, whether you’re practicing against another team or yourself,” Jones stated on Monday. “I believe we succeeded in doing that. Throughout the day, we executed some plays nicely. As I already stated, there are undoubtedly certain things we wish we could take back and improve, but all in all, I felt we performed well, played hard, and played physically.

Jones and the Giants delivered a clear message at Monday’s practice, which is one important lesson to learn. This season, they’re not going to back down from anyone under any circumstance.
