ESPN: Eagles sign Jaguars favorite linebacker in a blockbuster deal.
By acquiring Shaquille Quarterman, a former Jacksonville Jaguars defender, the Philadelphia Eagles increased their depth at linebacker. Throughout his NFL career, the veteran has proven to be incredibly trustworthy.
Quarterman has participated in every game over the past three seasons. Quarterman recorded 30 tackles in 2021, the linebacker’s greatest NFL season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on August 5, 2024, on X, “Eagles are signing former Jaguars free-agent linebacker Shaquille Quarterman to a one-year contract, per source.”
Quarterman most likely will struggle to make the 53-man roster of the Eagles. Quarterman was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft following an outstanding collegiate career at Miami.
Quarterman’s physicality was commended by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein prior to the draft, who called the linebacker a “downhill thumper.”
Zierlein described the defender as a “four-year starter and team leader with a physical demeanor and impressive level of production” in his pre-draft profile. In the heart of the defense, Quarterman is strong and trustworthy, but his short-area agility and quickness as an open-field tackler are below average, and he does not have NFL range. He can thump straight and downhill, but when runs flow wide, he finds it difficult to remain ahead of rising blocks. He has a chance to be a backup inside linebacker because of his size and toughness.

Quarterman excelled while attending Miami, recording at least 80 tackles in each of his four years of college. In 13 games, the linebacker recorded 107 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 5 pass deflections, 2 fumble recoveries, and a sack in 2018, which was his greatest season to date. 94 Eliot Shorr-Parks of WIP thinks Quarterman will primarily be used on special teams for Philadelphia.
Has primarily participated in special teams. He has participated in about 55% of Jacksonville’s ST snaps over the past four years, Shorr-Parks said on X following the signing. “It appears that this signing is mostly for the special teams. If Oren Burks’ knee ailment is serious—he has missed the last few practices—he could be a possible replacement.
“He might make the final 53, but he feels more like a player on the practice squad who gets called up early in the season.”
