Breaking: Giants make a last minute move to trade a top NFL veteran before the deadline.

The New York Giants are still in desperate need of offensive line support. Even if they signed Jon Runyan Jr. and Jermaine Eluemunor, two starter guards, they may end up losing any offensive spark they have due to a severe lack of depth.

What many other teams in need of some extra punch up front had long since learned was revealed to New York. There aren’t many affordable veterans on the market, and it’s generally worn out. Among them is the veteran from Long Island named Greg Van Roten, whom Brian Daboll is ready to take a chance on.

Van Roten inked a contract with the Giants for the 2024 campaign. Carmen Bricillo, the offensive line coach, was previously Josh McDaniels’ offensive line coach with the Las Vegas Raiders, when Van Roten had a career turnaround. Bricillo visited New York with his most recent pet project.

The Giants may start Van Roten at guard and have two new starters going into the game if they kick Eluemunor to tackle, ending Evan Neal’s career. Van Roten did, however, come from some of the worst interior offensive line play in history a few years ago.

If Giants supporters who enjoy seeing the Jets struggle recognize that name, it’s because Van Roten was an unfit player. Van Roten was so awful with the Jets after his struggles in Carolina that supporters were demanding his benching each week.

Following a brief stint in Buffalo, Van Roten graded out as PFF’s 11th-best pass-blocking guard in the NFL with Las Vegas, not allowing a single penalty. Van Roten, 34, may continue to ride high after a strong Raiders season, or he might go back to his awful Jets days.

Aaron Robinson, a previous third-round selection, was released to create space for Van Roten on the depth chart. Despite having exceptional speed and a fierce tape at UCF, Robinson was only able to log 32 tackles and a few starts for the Giants due to injury. This was a poor choice, but not because of anything that Robinson did.

There is never an excessive number of talented offensive lineman in the current NFL. Though it is difficult to watch the Giants formally give up on Robinson, Van Roten is a bit of a dice roll, and Robinson is still a superior guard than most other options available.
