The Philadelphia Eagles, who fell apart in December and January of the previous season, are thought by some to be ready to make a great comeback this season.
The Eagles’ defense, which was their weakest point the previous season, needs to improve if they want to be Super Bowl contenders once more.
The linebacker position is perhaps their greatest weakness, but three of their young linebackers, Patrick Johnson, Jalyx Hunt, and Nolan Smith, have shown toughness and perseverance thus far in training camp, according to head coach Nick Sirianni.
After being selected by Philadelphia in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Johnson has appeared in three NFL seasons, largely on special teams, and has racked up 35 total tackles (23 solo) and three quarterback hits.\
Hunt was selected by Philadelphia in the third round of this year’s draft. Hunt rose to prominence in the Southland Conference while attending Houston Christian University, winning the conference’s defensive player of the year award the previous year and earning a spot in the 2024 Senior Bowl.
Smith was selected with the 30th overall choice in the 2023 draft and went on to record 1.0 sacks, three quarterback hits, and 18 total tackles (10 solo) in his rookie season.
After the Eagles traded veteran linebacker Haason Reddick this offseason, they could use a new stud or two on their front seven after ranking 31st in passing yards and touchdowns allowed last year.
They did sign free agent Bryce Huff, who is slated to start at linebacker, but they need some additional help back there in order to have a real shot at the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
