TE Theo Johnson passes physical, returns to practice; Giants sign CB Breon Borders

Over the past few weeks, the New York Giants have been systematically improving their secondary. Breon Borders joined the squad via free agency after Tre Herndon, a player with expertise in both the slot and the boundary, was added in a depth role.

Giants Add New Players to Strengthen Secondary
By dismissing quarterback Nathan Rourke to make place for Borders, the Giants expressed their expectation that Borders will contend for a roster position this summer. Borders, an undrafted free agent, has previously been a member of the practice squads of the Houston Texans, Jacksonville, Washington, Tennessee, and Arizona, among other NFL clubs. He didn’t play in the NFL again until 2021.

Borders has played 526 defensive snaps, accumulating 32 tackles with a 11.4% missed tackle rate, giving up 501 yards in coverage, and giving up six touchdowns. In addition, he has five pass breakups and one interception on record.

Shane Bowen’s Reunion
Under Shane Bowen, who is currently the defensive coordinator for the Giants, he had his most notable season in 2020, playing 360 snaps while giving up 290 yards and three touchdowns. One could view Borders’ reunion with Bowen as a chance to resurrect his career in a setting he is familiar with.

Need to Make an Impression at Training Camp
Borders hasn’t made a significant defensive appearance in a long time. He only played in nine snaps on special teams in 2022, which was his last game.

It looks like Bowen is providing Borders with this opportunity as a favor, which gives him the ability to take advantage of and profit from. In order to guarantee a position on the roster, Borders needs to step up his performance and integration now that training camp is underway and the preseason is drawing near.
