Breaking: Daniel Jones of the Giants reacts to being replaced by a rookie.
The summertime television series “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” has revealed that general manager Joe Schoen of the Giants was seriously considering selecting a 2024 NFL Draft prospect to eventually replace starting quarterback Daniel Jones.
On Wednesday, Jones discussed the off-season discussion he had with Schoen concerning the executive’s plans with reporters.
According to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post and Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Jones acknowledged, “Obviously it’s not, you know, you’re not excited about it.” “But, things are as they are; I have a job to do, and they have a job to perform. We’ve arrived at this stage. I’m appreciative of the chance I have and eager to play football; those are currently my main priorities. Yes, the discourse isn’t enjoyable.”
Jones has a history of injuries, including two neck problems since 2021 and an ACL tear sustained in November of last year, which Schoen publicly revealed this past winter, giving the Giants “something we’ve gotta consider” before the selection. In particular, Big Blue considered trading up from the sixth overall selection in order to choose North Carolina signal-caller Drake Maye and LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.
But Daniels was selected by the Washington Commanders with the second pick, and Maye was selected by the New England Patriots with the third pick. Finally, Schoen helped Jones by selecting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick.
In a Wednesday interview with reporters, Schoen refrained from denying that the Giants would sideline a healthy Jones this autumn and then opt out of the 27-year-old’s contract in March 2025. Jones appears to be making every effort to block out the noise at training camp in order to recover fully in time for New York’s Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
“Yeah, I think however you want to call the motivation or the drive, I’ve always felt like I’m motivated and driven and work harder than — work as hard as I possibly can, that’s always been my mindset and my approach,” said Jones.
Jones was ranked sixth among the betting favorites to win the Comeback Player of the Year Award this season at +1600 odds as of Thursday morning by DraftKings Sportsbook. Securing that championship might guarantee his continued status with the Giants in a year.
