The offense of the New York Yankees needs to be improved, especially in the middle infield. That ought to make Jazz Chisholm Jr., a star player for the Miami Marlins, an alluring trade target on paper, but things might work out differently in practice.

According to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, the Yankees have at least given Chisholm some thought, but they are unsure about how his style would mesh with their clubhouse. It is generally believed that the Marlins will deal Chisholm before the trade deadline of July 30.

Although the Yankees had previously been connected to Chisholm, other teams most likely have similar concerns. The 26-year-old isn’t always popular in the game and has occasionally had disagreements with Miami teammates.

He has also spent the previous two seasons playing in the outfield, though the Marlins have moved to establish that he can still play infield as he did when he initially debuted in 2020.

Presumably, there is a feeling of urgency here, given the Yankees have gotten absolutely nothing on offense from second baseman Gleyber Torres and third baseman DJ LeMahieu. Chisholm would make a lot of sense, but it may end up hurting more than it would help if the team feels he is not a good fit.

Chisholm, who is hitting.251 with 13 home runs and 21 stolen bases this season, is considered to be almost certain to be moved.
