Breaking: Two-time former state champion and UNC QB roars, “Tell me what has to be done, and I’ll get it done”.
On the football field, the third-year quarterback from Alabaster, Alabama, has surmounted his fair share of challenges. He is currently vying for UNC’s QB1 spot.
Chapel Hill, North Carolina — The University of North Carolina’s Rammy Awards event, held in late April in Memorial Hall, brought together athletes from several sports programs to honor their achievements during the previous year. Conner Harrell entered the room wearing an attire that succeeded in making an impression on everyone else who had come dressed to the nines.
Harrell was dressed in a specially made suit that his father, Marvin, had made for him. For almost two decades, Marvin Harrell has been a skilled tailor, creating custom costumes to suit the wants and events of his clientele. Harrell’s father had previously sewn him outfits for special events like prom and graduation. This time, he chose an outfit that would work well in both an entertaining and professional context.
Harrell wanted to seem dapper while still having a good time with his attire. He entered wearing a gray suit coat with matching pants and, for added flair, an orange tie over his white shirt. The words “Blessings Secured,” which also stand for a collective he and a few of his pals founded in 2020 to encourage athletes to discuss faith, were written inside his suit jacket.
Harrell is someone who is aware of the situation. Though he doesn’t think of himself as a fashion expert, he does speak up when asked.
“To be honest, all I’m wearing is shorts and slides if I’m not attending any events,” Harrell said to Inside Carolina. “A little laid back. I don’t do big-ticket purchases. If I need something, I have it. I’ve got it if I need to pop out.”
He took home the Best Dressed trophy that evening thanks to his ensemble. For Harrell, winning was a childhood habit.
As the starting quarterback for Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama, he won two state titles and was named valedictorian of his class. Harrell was awarded both the 7A Back of the Year award by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and the Gatorade Player of the Year title in Alabama.
“Conner fulfilled every requirement,” stated Marvin Harrell. “A quarterback is someone who leads, is intelligent, popular, and physically fit. He won at whatever he attempted.”
Even though Harrell enjoys winning, he also enjoys being challenged. Harrell always accepted the challenging in all he did, including sports, classes, and hobbies.
Since joining UNC, Harrell has faced several challenges on the football field. After serving as the backup quarterback for the first two seasons, he is now vying for the starting job.
Harrell will approach that competition with the same mindset he’s used to prior challenges, regardless of whether he starts in 2024.
Marvin Harrell remarked, “I think everybody is surprised by Conner every time.” “Tell me what has to be done, and I’ll get it done. And he has carried it out. Every time the call came in, he responded. He’s accomplished that both on and off the field. So that the rest of the world can see what we see and know about Conner, I hope he is given the chance he deserves. It’s going to be exciting, and if given the chance, I believe he’s going to do some really amazing things.”
