In the fourth year of Josh Heupel’s coaching tenure, UT football is eagerly anticipating the 2024 season and has great expectations.

After a 9-4 year, the Tennessee Volunteers are eager for more in head coach Josh Heupel’s fourth season as an Orange.

Nico Iamaleava, a redshirt freshman quarterback and former five-star recruit, is the focal point of the offensive-minded coach’s play design. The Vols during SEC Media Days gave every sign that Iamaleava is prepared to take the lead on Rocky Top.

“He exudes confidence,” Heupel remarked. “He works hard, which is why he is that way. He’s a fantastic groupmate. He’s developing into a superb boss. I can’t wait for him to lead the offensive inside our facility and launch the campaign with him in ’24.”

The feeling of greater leadership was shared by his colleagues, particularly by a seasoned player such as seventh-year linebacker Keenan Pili.

“Observing his development and maturation throughout my time here has been incredibly cool,” Pili remarked. “I’ve kind of watched him take over the team and assume that leadership role since he entered as a freshman, especially this offseason. I believe that we have a certain amount of accountability to him as athletes. We are obliged to him. Even though he may be a little younger than us, we still look to him for guidance.

Iamaleava is set up to be Heupel’s powerful offensive focal point in 2024. Cooper Mays, his senior offensive line center, predicted that with the new quarterback in the mix, the offense will run well.

If there’s one thing I know about Coach Heupel and his system, it’s that he knows how to ratchet it up and employ his playmakers. There may be new weapons, Mays added. I’m confident it will happen frequently, but I’m not sure how it will happen.

This Tennessee football team’s offensive will only be one component, and the players believe they can contend for a national championship this year.

Our squad has a lot of veteran players, said to senior defensive lineman Omari Thomas. “Those guys on the defensive, they really are my brothers.” Simply knowing that we all share the same objective makes it enjoyable to work with them every day. The goal that unites us all is to secure a national title.

“At Tennessee, winning championships is the standard,” Heupel stated. “We’re racing against time to reach our destination. In the past three years, including the most recent season, we’ve accomplished a great deal. Though we must still climb, we are proud of the steps we have taken.

Josh Heupel is trying to return Tennessee football to the heights of glory from when the team last won a national championship in 1998.

Heupel stated, “There are times when gaining feet is easier than gaining inches.” Ultimately, as a program, we have to keep developing both personally and collectively. I’m quite proud of our accomplishments. We’ve probably finished third in the past several seasons in terms of wins, but there’s still more for us to win.

On Saturday, August 31, 2024, the Volunteers take on Chattanooga at home in their home opener. On Saturday, September 21, the Sooners will play their first league game as a conference member when they travel to Oklahoma for their SEC debut. Josh Heupel, an Oklahoma quarterback who won a national title, stated that coming back to Norman would simply mean changing sidelines for him.
