Breaking: Giants owner send a strong warning to GM concerning Saquon Barkley.
John Mara, the owner of the New York Giants, might have experienced some insomnia during the offseason.
This past offseason, Mara and Giants general manager Joe Schoen had a chat that was highlighted in the most recent episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” which aired on Tuesday night. Mara was requesting an update on the status of her star running back, Saquon Barkley, who was at the time a free agent.
Schoen informed Mara that, in an attempt to raise the asking price, the general manager had just received a text message informing him that the Chicago Bears were interested in Barkley. The individual who texted Schoen also asserted that Barkley was “out” for the Philadelphia Eagles. In reaction, Mara said he wouldn’t be able to sleep if Barkley signed a contract with the Eagles.
Mara remarked, “I’ll tell you what, if Saquon goes to Philadelphia, I’m gonna have a hard time sleeping.” Like I’ve said before, simply being out… I’ve spent enough time with players. He is without a doubt our most well-liked player.
Naturally, Barkley signed a $37.75 million, three-year contract with the Eagles.
Mara freely acknowledged that he was more worried about the player’s popularity than assembling the greatest squad possible, in comments that were classic owner speak. Even yet, it seems sense that he objected to his greatest player signing a contract with a division opponent, which is exactly what happened.
Barkley’s release will eventually be decided by Schoen. In a different popular “Hard Knocks” video, the General Manager provided an explanation of his reasoning.
Mara will not be pleased if Barkley helps the Eagles win games and the Giants miss the playoffs once more.
