Mariners trade pitcher Dallas Keuchel to Brewers for $1

MILWAUKEE — It looks like the Dallas Keuchel experiment in Milwaukee is done.

The former Cy Young Award winner, who was paid cash to acquire him from Seattle in late June, was set to be assigned on Sunday. The Brewers lost 6-5 to the Nationals on Saturday after Keuchel of the Arkansas Razorbacks gave up five straight hits to start the fourth inning. The Brewers had earlier blown a five-run lead.

With the Brewers, Keuchel made four starts and recorded a 5.40 ERA while giving up 10 runs and 23 hits in 16 2/3 innings pitched without a decision. In his second start against Colorado, the 36-year-old left-hander only made it to the fourth inning once, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Could adding Dallas Keuchel help Brewers' shortage of starting pitching?

Milwaukee jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on Saturday, but Keuchel was pulled after 65 pitches were used and he gave up eight hits altogether, including three runs and five singles in the fourth inning without an out.

A factor in the decision was the Brewers’ expectation that a number of injured pitchers would return during the All-Streak break.

Brewers General Manager Matt Arnold stated on Sunday, “Obviously, Dallas is a great pedigree and what he did, he kept us in a lot of games.” “He performed exceptionally well for us. It really depends on how many of our players return, in my opinion.”

Keuchel has given the Brewers seven days to try to clear waivers or arrange a trade. Keuchel has the option to become a free agent and decline an assignment outright.

Arnold remarked, “We talked to him last night.” “He really is a pro; he was excellent. We naturally want the best for him.”

After being acquired by Milwaukee, Keuchel, who was 7-4 with a 3.93 ERA at the Mariner’s Triple-A affiliate Tacoma, was the 2015 AL Cy Young winner with Houston.

In 2023, Keuchel made 10 appearances for Minnesota, including six starts, and finished with a 2-1 record and 5.97 ERA. He had a 9.20 ERA in 14 starts over three teams in 2022, going 2-9.

In his 13-year major league career, Keuchel is 103-92 with a 4.04 ERA and has made two All-Star appearances. The year he earned the Cy Young award, he went 20-8 with a 2.43 ERA while pitching for Houston.
