Breaking: The New York Giants part ways with their controversial player.
Daniel Jones, the quarterback for the New York Giants, has shown a great deal of patience. He’s about to start his sixth NFL season, and the sooner he gets things straightened out the better, the sooner the Giants can move on.
NFL fans got a behind-the-scenes peek at how the team is handling its offseason with the premiere of HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” on Tuesday.
Joe Schoen, general manager of the Giants, appears undecided about Daniel Jones.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen and his team can be seen debating what to do with Daniel Jones in the episode. The organization attempted, but was unable, to move up in the draft to select Drake Maye, the quarterback for North Carolina, according to reports from earlier in the offseason.
Additionally, the organization’s choice to let running back Saquon Barkley leave for the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency was influenced by Jones’ $160 million contract, which he signed with the team in 2022. This indicates that the team is still confident in Jones, or maybe they are trying to save a dubious deal by giving him another go.
Jones is about to embark on yet another pivotal season with the Giants.
In the episode, Schoen gave his staff a rundown of what they may expect from Jones’ make-or-break 2024 campaign and even floated the notion of switching to a different quarterback should things not work out as expected:
“This year is Daniel’s year.” The whole plan was to give him a few years,” Schoen informed his employees. “Do we have him for the next ten years? Or should we change course and look for someone else?
Given Jones’ history of injuries, the team should be concerned.
The recent history of injuries sustained by Jones worries Schoen and the other members of the Giants’ executive office. The quarterback hurt his neck against the Miami Dolphins in Week 5 of the previous season. Before returning for the club in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders, Jones would miss the following three games.
His season was practically over when he tore his ACL against the Raiders in the first quarter, making his comeback from injury short-lived. In a sit-down interview with HBO, Schoen defended his biggest investment while outlining their concerns about injuries to their franchise quarterback.
“We need to protect ourselves because there have been three serious injuries in the last two years,” Schoen stated. This year, he didn’t get many opportunities. That is true. Less than 60 snaps were played by your core group of players together, much like your offseason. We have three guys from our practice squad playing for us, Miami.
Jones intends to make an impression when the 2024 season begins. Many would concur that his career has been unimpressive thus far, and perhaps the Giants shouldn’t have given him such a short leash. However, Jones is New York’s quarterback, and it is his responsibility to refute any stories that cast doubt on his ability to lead a franchise.
