ESPN: UNC basketball land in a new assistant coach
The men’s basketball team at the University of Denver announced the appointment of Shammond Williams as their newest assistant coach.
In 2024–25, Shammond Williams, a former guard for UNC basketball, will become an assistant coach at the University of Denver.
Williams has been a collegiate basketball coach for more than ten years, working with teams like Western Kentucky, Tulane, and Furman. The former Tar Heel has assisted in coaching the Old Dominion women’s basketball team for the last three years.
Under head coach Jeff Wulbrun, Williams will work in his new position in Denver. Wulbrun guided the Pioneers to their first-ever Summit League Championship Game in the 2023–24 campaign. The team finished with a 17–17 record, its highest victory total since the 22–10 season in 2012–13.
Williams expressed his readiness for the task and his opinions on the new position in a statement issued by University of Denver Athletics.
“Being able to represent the University of Denver and head coach Jeff Wulbrun excites me greatly. The coaching community is aware that Coach Wulbrun is not only a fantastic coach but also a wonderful person. Jeff is a well-respected coach in our industry who genuinely cares about his athletes and staff. I consider myself fortunate to have worked for two amazing people: Jeff Wulbrun and Delisha Milton Jones. I am excited to return to Mile High City with my family and to represent Pioneer Family and The University of Denver.
Williams hopes to make it to his fourth Final Four as a coach after making it to the 1997, 1998, and 1995 editions as a player for the UNC basketball team. The announcement coincides with the hiring of former UNC basketball player Jerry Stackhouse as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, another UNC great who secured a coaching position in recent days.
