ESPN: The New York Giants former most favorite running back and current eagles star announce his return to the club via…….
The New York Giants were chastised by numerous pundits for selecting Saquon Barkley with the second overall choice in the 2018 NFL Draft. He quickly disproved their assumptions by earning Offensive Rookie of the Year and amassing 2,028 yards and 15 touchdowns from scrimmage.
Barkley would, however, only go on to record two more 1,000-yard rushing seasons and three seasons in which he exceeded the 1K mark from scrimmage due to injuries, one of which was an ACL injury in 2020. When Barkley eventually became an unrestricted free agent, the Giants failed to make a compelling offer, so he agreed to a $37.5 million, three-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, their rival team.
The Giants were criticized once more, but this time it was for not being prepared to pay their finest player in the skill position. It just made things hotter when he landed with a competing contender.
The Eagles signed a two-time Pro Bowl rushing back who might not have been used properly with the Giants, thus they shouldn’t have been punished for paying a 27-year-old running back close to market value. Barkley will get the opportunity to run behind one of the NFL’s top offensive lines in Philadelphia, in the meanwhile. With Jason Kelce retired, we’ll see if it holds true, but the Eagles still have a solid base in place.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, an NFL insider, reports that some now anticipate a career year from the seventh-year player.
They have Saquon Barkley, who is their greatest weapon. According to evaluators I’ve spoken with throughout the league, Barkley might have an impact similar to Christian McCaffrey’s in San Francisco. A great performer who moves to a place where his supporting cast has never been better.
In 2022, Barkley recorded a career-high 1,312 running yards on 295 carries. He is thought to be even more effective in Philadelphia, as he will have access to an offense that features several other talented players, including as DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, and Jalen Hurts.
Barkley has shown that he is a capable player now, but we will soon get to witness his full potential. Like the 49ers with McCaffrey, the Eagles will have one of the best all-around running backs in the NFL if he can make a leap similar to that of Christian McCaffrey.
Remember, McCaffrey’s previous career-high in rushing yards came in 2019 when he recorded 1,387 yards on 287 carries. Many felt he had reached his peak, but the 49ers didn’t agree. Last season, he broke his previous personal best, with a 1,459-yard season on 272 carries. He also added 564 receiving yards to get up to an NFL-best 2,023 yards from scrimmage.
If the Eagles can utilize their new toy much like Kyle Shanahan weaponized McCaffrey, then we could indeed see a record year from Barkley, and all the Giants could do is sit back and regret their decision.
