2024 NBA Draft: Devin Carter's Improved Game - NBA Draft Digest - Latest Draft News and Prospect Rankings

Devin Carter, a combo guard for Providence Friars, was chosen by the Sacramento Kings with the 13th overall choice in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Even though it’s early, I, along with many others, seem happy with the Kings’ choice. The man with the most influence over decisions, general manager Monte McNair, is first among those individuals. He was so happy with the selection, in fact, that he declared as much in a statement:

Devin Carter simply fulfills every requirement. There are a lot of Devin Carters in the playoffs this year if you watch them. That is how I will phrase it.””

McNair Is Accurate
It goes without saying that McNair will be biased toward Carter because he was a member of the administration that drafted him. But what he said isn’t incorrect either.

Carter is fundamentally a two-way guard. He provides you with scoring and space on offense. In addition, he provides rim protection (considering his size), defensive rebounding, defensive playmaking, and point-of-attack ability.

To identify any players who suit that description, all you have to do is take a peek at the NBA Champion Boston Celtics. Jrue Holiday and Derrick White provide comparable two-way balance. Carter undoubtedly fits their basketball player paradigm, even though there is no assurance (in fact, I’d argue it’s a long shot) that he would ever attain their pedigree.

You want your role players to be generalists rather than specialists in today’s NBA. You’re looking for someone who can do a little bit of everything, similar to the starting five players of the Boston Celtics. In theory, the Kings’ versatility is unlocked by Carter’s skill set. And if that theoretical prediction comes true in real life at the NBA level, McNair will have been entirely accurate in his remarks.
