ESPN: “outrageous” trade moves sends Philadelphia phillies into tight corner.

Rob Thomson has worked lifetime for this moment with Phillies

As of 2024, the Philadelphia Phillies are one of baseball’s top clubs. However, as the July 30 trade deadline draws near, manager Rob Thomson’s team has an obvious need in the outfield. Could Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, strike a deal within the division to acquire Jazz Chisholm Jr., an outfielder for the Miami Marlins?

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report came up with eight “outrageous” moves that would cause a stir before the deadline. What he put together to get Philly some outfield support is as follows:

Miller characterized this arrangement as “outrageous” because it is uncommon for division opponents to make deals with one another.

Miller stated, “Chisholm isn’t having the best season of his career, but he has been more productive than Philadelphia’s current options and has been healthy (for a change).” In addition, he only makes $2.6 million this season and will be controlled by the team for the next two seasons. That makes him a reasonably priced long-term solution for a team that currently has the largest 2025 payroll on file.

The Phillies Would Gain a Much-Needed Outfield Boost with Chisholm
Chisholm’s offensive averages for 2024 aren’t very impressive, but he would be a welcome addition to Philly’s starting lineup. Through 336 plate appearances, the left-handed hitter is slashing.259/.324/.423 with 10 home runs, 12 doubles, 39 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 14 steals. Although it’s not as good as the.860 he recorded in his 2022 All-Star year, his.747 OPS is still productive.

This is especially true when considering the outfield performance of the Phillies this season at the plate. Philadelphia’s outfielders hit a combined.236/.299/.363 before the July 1 games began. FanGraphs ranks their combined.662 OPS as the 23rd best in baseball.
