Breaking: Yankees sign in a $5 million mega star from miami marlins.
The Baltimore Orioles have taken the lead in the American League East from the New York Yankees. Manager Aaron Boone’s team is still 53-32 and in a great position to make a postseason comeback, despite a recent tough stretch. Is it possible that general manager Brian Cashman may attempt to acquire Miami Marlins reliever Tanner Scott in order to bolster the bullpen prior to the July 30 trade deadline?
Six trade suggestions were compiled by Chris Kirschner and Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, which may help the Yankees’ present roster’s weak spots. Jim Bowden, a former general manager, also offered his assessment of each. This is the arrangement that would move Scott to the Bronx:
The Marlins shouldn’t pass up this offer because I don’t believe they can succeed elsewhere. Peraza would start at shortstop for the Marlins, while Cabrera would serve as their super utility player, according to Bowden. They are both disposable since the Yankees have stronger players blocking them. Peraza does not exhibit it in the Bronx, but he still has a lot of potential.
Scott’s Potential Additions to the Yankees Bullpen
Thus far in 2024, New York’s bullpen has performed avowedly mediocre. According to FanGraphs, the team’s combined 3.73 ERA is good for 14th place in baseball, while their 1.4 fWAR puts them in 17th place. With a 2.65 ERA through 34 innings, closer Clay Holmes has played well in his final season before becoming a free agent. But it’s never a terrible idea to load up on another high-leverage reliever with late-inning expertise for the stretch run.
If the Bombers were to acquire Scott through a trade, they would receive precisely that. His performance has become better every season since he joined the Marlins in 2022. In 2022, he recorded a 4.31 ERA and 1.61 WHIP; in 2023, he recorded a 2.31 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. After pitching 35 innings in 2024, he has a 1.17 WHIP and a lower ERA of 1.54.
In terms of pay, the 29-year-old left-handed pitcher wouldn’t be too expensive either. According to Spotrac, Scott is making $5.7 million this season. This November, he’ll also be hitting the free-agent scene. This may be a good fit for the Yankees, given that team owner Hal Steinbrenner might not be eager to take on a large contract to bolster the roster.
Many Teams Are Interested in Signing Scott
When they sent infielder Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres on May 4, the Marlins sent a clear indication that they would be sellers at the trade deadline. As of June 30 games, the club’s record was at 30-53, so it’s doubtful that much has changed.
Teams can place an offer on Miami’s appealing pitcher, Scott, who seems to be a determined seller. The fact that a competitive market is expected for relievers is not at all surprising. In a June 27 report, Jon Heyman of the New York Post connected the southpaw to the Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York. Heyman added that “many others” are regarded to be considering hiring him.
If Scott is the Yankees’ primary target for a trade deadline acquisition, they will have competition from a wide range of possible buyers in their attempt to consummate a deal.
