ESPN news: This is the greatest mistake i have ever made and i,m regreting already…..Rafael Nadal.
Rafael Nadal joined Wimbledon initially but chose not to play at SW19; based on his retirement status, it appears he won’t play there in the future. However, Andy Roddick feels that he had a chance to win the grass court major.
Given that players must swap surfaces in order to return to clay after competing at Roland Garros earlier this summer, Roddick said he understood why Nadal did not play. However, Roddick asserts that the Spaniard had every opportunity to win games. Though he understands why he wouldn’t want to put himself in danger, the warning about the grass is that movement is necessary.
“I understand that if he had chosen to play, he (Nadal) might have won matches and had a run at Wimbledon. The body hates when surfaces are switched. Suddenly, you’re battling with lower back problems on grass because you’re bending and twisting, which isn’t necessary for him, when you were building up reserves on clay, grinding out matches, and practicing your bodywork,” Roddick remarked.
“Listen, he made the correct choice, but in my opinion—I haven’t decided if I truly believe it—that might be his greatest chance to win a Slam or go to the final four at this point, even with clay. Therefore, all of the adjustments he needs to do for his body right now are kind of adjustments that he needs to make on grass anyway, based on what his body is capable of doing, the movement, speed, and receives a little aid on the serve. I’m just glad that we’ll get to see him at the Olympics once more.”
Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal expressed sorrow for not postponing the event, stating that he had to make the difficult but regrettable decision to compete in the Olympics.
“We feel that playing on clay until then will benefit my body the most in achieving this aim (of competing in the Olympics). I shall miss competing at Wimbledon this year’s Championships because of this. I regret that I was unable to experience this year the wonderful energy of that incredible event, which will always hold a special place in my heart, and to be with all of the British supporters who have always shown me so much support. I’ll miss you all,” he posted on X, the previous Twitter platform.
