Mets Morning News: Luis Severino brings the heat in first spring start - Amazin' Avenue

Although the New York Yankees lead the New York Mets by 10.5 games in the standings, it’s difficult to determine which club is superior following this week.

This past week, the New York teams squared off in the annual Subway Series, with the Queens club crushing the Bronx team.

The Mets defeated the Yankees 21-9 at Citi Field to win the two games by a total of 12 runs. The Mets, who are currently 15-6 in June heading into their final series of the month against the Houston Astros, maintained their amazing turnaround with this series.

One straightforward question was posed to Severino prior to Wednesday’s game: “What’s the biggest difference about being a Met versus being a Yankee?”

In response, Severino said, “having a beard.”

Since George Steinbrenner acquired the Yankees in 1973, the franchise has enforced a rigorous no-beard and no-hair-below-the-collar policy. Severino was never permitted to develop a beard throughout his MLB career because he spent his entire career with the Yankees.

Severino was allowed to grow facial hair with the other New York team, which surprised a few of his former teammates at the Yankees:

Severino did respond to the question in a more sincere manner following the joke about his beard.

With the Mets, Severino remarked, “This is definitely just a little bit, I will say, more calm.” “Nobody is expecting us to win this year when you come here. We’re under a little less strain now. It seems like we’ll come here, win some games, and then see what transpires at the conclusion of the season. However, everyone at the Yankees understood that “since we are the Yankees, we must play if we hope to win the division.”

Whether you liked them or not, the Mets were the superior New York club this week. Even though Severino was not able to play against his old team, he has contributed to the Mets this season, going 5-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 90.1 innings pitched.
