Breaking: Giants sign in Steelers fans favorite QB, a replacement for Daniel Jones.
Although Daniel Jones’s future appears to be secure for the time being, there is always talk about why the New York Giants should trade their starting quarterback. One such trader who has been around for nine years, Russell Wilson, is mentioned as a possible Jones replacement in 2025 should the current signal-caller struggle. Dan Duggan of The Athletic put together a list of Jones alternatives, and Wilson stands out because the Giants met with the Super Bowl winner prior to his signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.
Duggan explained why the Giants might want to revisit those talks to avoid entering any sweepstakes for Dallas Cowboys’ starter Dak Prescott in 2025 free agency: “The Giants had a ‘exploratory meeting’ with Wilson this offseason before he signed a one-year deal with a Steelers team coming off a playoff appearance. That sets up the nine-time Pro Bowler to hit the market again next offseason. The Giants may find the 35-year-old to be a win-now option at a significantly cheaper cost than Prescott.
If the Giants put a deal together for Wilson next March they’ll be assuming two things. One, the veteran can get back to the levels he played at for the Seattle Seahawks. Two, they’re ready to completely give up on their expensive investment in Jones.
Russell Wilson Would Be a Risk for Giants
There’s a reason the Giants talked with Wilson this offseason. It’s because of his performance with the Seahawks.
Wilson was an exceptional dual-threat player who was also a lethal deep passer who could move quickly. Wilson’s qualities spurred the Seahawks to win the Lombardi Trophy and go to the Super Bowl two years in a row.
Wilson’s regression after a stunning trade to the Denver Broncos in 2022 is the issue. Wilson “posted a Total QBR of 3.6” against the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, according to ESPN Stats & Info, marking the lowest point of his troubles.
