Before the deadline on July 30 at 6 p.m. ET, the New York Yankees should think about making a trade for Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., as they witnessed personally on Thursday night.
In a 9-2 victory over the Yankees, Guerrero went 2-for-5 and hit a 371-foot home run off a pitch that Phil Bickford threw at 93 mph in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Blue Jays won’t likely make a run in the second half of the season, despite the thrilling victory. With a 13.5-game deficit to the Baltimore Orioles, they are last in the American League East and have a 4.6 percent chance of qualifying for the postseason according to FanGraphs Baseball.
Guerrero has a $19.9 million one-year contract, but in 2025 he will be eligible for arbitration. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins stated on Thursday that he would like to sign the 25-year-old slugger and shortstop Bo Bichette to multi-year contracts rather than trade them. He made this statement during an appearance on CJCL-FM in Toronto.
In prior contract negotiations, Guerrero and Bichette “never came close” to reaching an understanding, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. It makes sense for the struggling Blue Jays to put their stars up for grabs and start rebuilding right now.
The three-time All-Star Guerrero has stated he would never wear Yankee pinstripes during his career. Virus Deportivo recently reported that he had changed his mind, saying, “[I’d] be happy to help any team.”
The Yankees should try to work out a deal even if the Blue Jays might not want to trade one of their greatest players to a divisional opponent.
With designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list and first baseman Anthony Rizzo (forearm) on the 60-day injured list, New York’s lineup is significantly weaker.
The Yankees (52-31) have dropped their last four games and allowed 33-12 points to be scored against them. Guerrero might just be a one-year rental, but he might be able to provide New York outfielders Aaron Judge and Juan Soto the support they so desperately need.
