Keith Hernandez is about to take off!
The New York Mets Following the Mets’ 12-2 victory against the New York Yankees, star outfielder Juan Soto failed to chase down a fly ball in right field, adding further fuel to the flames this Subway Series, according to Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez.
Hernandez stated on the SNY broadcast, “He’s been a liability out there.” “You have to ask yourself why they want to use him in this ballpark at the deepest corner outfield spot. Yes, Yankee Stadium. It’s a fly ball, though. That needs to be discovered.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Mets led 4-0 thanks to a fly ball that Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez hit that Soto was unable to collect. Brandon Nimmo scored from second and Pete Alonso advanced from first to third.
In the fifth inning, the Mets would score three more runs to extend their advantage to 7-0. In the end, they would win 12-2 to sweep the two-game series.
Soto could have done a better job running after that fly ball, even though he was not given credit for a mistake on the play. Soto has been playing right field on Yankee Stadium’s infamous “short porch,” where the right field wall is only 314 feet from home plate, as Hernandez previously mentioned.
Right-center field is 375 feet from home plate at Citi Field, while right-field pole is 330 feet away.
This season, Juan Soto has not been a liability.
Juan Soto hasn’t played a particularly poor defense this season, notwithstanding this seeming error. Based on Statcast, he is 57th out of 128 qualifying players, 1 outs above average.
Soto is having another All-Star-caliber season at the plate, leading the league in walks, OBP (.434), AVG (.303), SLG (.567), and home runs (19).
The Mets are anticipated to chase the crosstown sensation when Soto hits free agency this year.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, “if the Mets made a play, nobody should be surprised.”
Other than the Yankees, Heyman indicated that the Mets were the most likely team to sign Soto.
Hernandez is unlikely to call Soto out like he did on Wednesday night if he does play for the Queens next season.
