It has been claimed that the New York Knicks are not done trying to complete the Villanova collective. After trading Mikal Bridges to the Knicks for a ton of draft capital on Tuesday night in an incredible blockbuster deal, the Brooklyn Nets now have their sights set on free agent guard Kyle Lowry, another Villanova alum.

“Sources stated that Bridges always had a thing for New York, particularly after the Knicks signed Donte DiVincenzo in the summer of 2023 after the trade deadline that brought Josh Hart to the team. These Wildcat ties extend deep, and according to insiders, NBA players have even suggested Kyle Lowry as a potential free agent target for New York, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

Knicks could add another former Villanova guard to their bench following Bridges deal

Kyle Lowry might be a good fit for the Knicks.

Aside from his affiliation with Villanova, Lowry would be a great low-cost addition to the Knicks, who are in dire need of a backup point guard. He played for the Miami Heat for the majority of the previous season before joining the Philadelphia 76ers. He was able to rediscover his shooting form in 23 games with the Sixers, averaging eight points on 40% of his three-point attempts while dishing out 4.6 assists a contest to help create plays.

The 38-year-old guard, who will soon begin his 19th NBA season, is still a productive player despite being somewhat of an outsider on a Knicks team that is dominated by younger players. Six-time All-Star Lowry adds championship experience to the table and was the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 winner. He can also benefit from playing with Miles McBride in the second unit, since he had trouble really leading an offense in the previous campaign.

Lowry’s inexpensive signing could aid in their efforts to re-sign Anunoby.

Following the Bridges trade, the Knicks may not be able to re-sign both OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein, who are free agents of their own. After the Bridges trade, Ian Begley of SNY wrote that while Anunoby’s return is still a top priority, it is “increasingly unlikely” that Hartenstein will be able to return. At the absolute least, signing Lowry to a cheap one-year contract might help them re-sign Anunoby, and they could then have the best team to compete with the Boston Celtics for the championship the following season.
