Rejected Rams Proposal Affected Panthers' Extension Talks With Brian Burns

The Giants believe they got a decent bargain when they acquired Brian Burns in a trade from the Panthers, according to the show’s teaser, which was released today. The Giants will be highlighted in a new offseason chapter of Hard Knocks next month.

The Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are seen in the teaser talking about possible trades for Burns. Schoen states in the video that he believes two second-round draft picks would be the price.

Have you had a chance to look at Brian Burns? Schoen informed Daboll, “We would have to trade, like, two twos, and then you’d have to pay him, like, $28–$29 million.”

However, the Giants only had to forfeit a fifth-round pick, a second-round pick, and a swap of fifth-round picks in order for the deal to go through. Burns was acquired by the Giants for less than anticipated, which suggests that the Panthers may have gotten more if they had pressed a tougher bargain.

It is also a reminder that the Rams reportedly made the Panthers an offer in 2022, when the Rams agreed to trade Burns for a first-round pick in 2024, a first-round pick in 2025, and a second-round pick in 2025. It demonstrates how badly the Panthers handled Burns that they turned down so many offers before dealing him for so little.

Burns signed a five-year, $141 million contract, or $28.2 million a year, proving that Schoen was correct about how much Burns would cost.
