ESPN news: Giants sign in a five-star QB as they prepare to move on from Daniel Jones.
Among the teams that have been in what can be called football purgatory are the New York Giants. This team hasn’t won a Super Bowl in a lengthy 13 years, and even though they’ve stayed relatively competitive, they don’t seem to have what it takes to return the Lombardi trophy to New York anytime soon.
Brady Gagnon of Bleacher Report says that quarterback Daniel Jones is the key to all of this.
Is It Time for the New York Giants to Let Daniel Jones Go?
Jones is about to begin his sixth season with the Giants, which will be his second full campaign since agreeing to a huge four-year, $160 million agreement. According to Gagnon, New York is still devoted to its starting quarterback, a decision the team ought to give careful thought to making:
“The Giants acknowledge that quarterback Daniel Jones isn’t the solution, only one and a half years after awarding him a sizable new contract. If that’s the case, Gagnon wrote, “the team probably knows it needs to acquire more draft capital in order to acquire that next franchise quarterback.”
Is it time to give Jones the boot? The Giants won’t do it before to Week 1, but if they have another sluggish start, things might drastically change.
The problem for the Giants, as Gagnon continues, is that they have enough quality surrounding Jones to be competitive. With players like Malik Nabers and Brian Burns joining them in the summer and a core that includes Andrew Thomas and Dexter Lawrence, among others, New York has a chance to make some noise this season.
However, if they ultimately opt to pass on Jones in favor of a new QB1 via the 2025 NFL Draft, this would be detrimental to their cause:
The Giants may unintentionally be competitive, even if Jones stays unproductive.
“That might force the organization to tank in the final stretch, with a trade involving a veteran like Bobby Okereke or Darius Slayton and future draft capital in exchange for a possible top-five pick being the first chapter of that,” Gagnon said.
It should go without saying that the Giants’ 2024 season will be extremely exciting.
