Breaking: Yankees vs Red sox game has been Rescheduled.
As our own Jake Devin has already reported, the most noteworthy development from yesterday was the official optioning of 2023 Yankees phenom Jasson Domínguez to Triple-A Scranton, ending his rehab assignment and assuming a standard minor-league role. This move was always expected given that the three outfielders and DH Giancarlo Stanton have combined for 67 home runs, so there’s no reason to mess with a winning combination just yet; if an injury occurs, that will be a different story.
Rotowire: Ace Gerrit Cole might be on track for his final rehab start before joining the Yankees rotation for the first time in 2024. He will get the ball on Friday for Triple-A Scranton up in Rochester, and take another step past the 57 pitches he threw on Sunday in Double-A. Manager Aaron Boone wouldn’t fully commit to placing Cole into the rotation yet after this—assuming all goes well and his elbow feels healthy—but the odds look decent. (Bravo to Cody Poteet on his work, though! Seriously.)
Tony Blengino, Forbes: Have there been many posts in this area in the last several months that are just variations on how to swoon over Luis Gil? Indeed. Will we no longer include them? No way, the guy is a blast. Being a longtime participant in the game and a former MLB front office executive, Blengino’s perspectives on Gil are especially valued. Blengino points out that Gil has excelled in both bat-missing and contact control, and that his “A++” four-seamer has been essential to his success.
MLB.com: The Friday night Yankees game against the Red Sox is scheduled to begin a bit earlier than anticipated. In order to make it easier for Boston fans to watch the Celtics in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at 8:30 p.m. ET, the first pitch, which was originally scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET, will now take place at 6:30 p.m. I like that Yankees/Red Sox will potentially end at an earlier time, even though I don’t really care about the latter outside of my general dislike for the enjoyment of Boston sports fans (which is feasible since the Celtics may sweep).
The Athletic | Brendan Kuty ($): Peter Brody published an excellent piece for us yesterday on how Michael Tonkin went from forgotten, oft-DFA’d arm to Yankees bullpen staple within 2024, but if you want the logistics and on his wayward journey to get to the Bronx in the first place, look no further than Kuty’s deep dive in The Athletic. The man has seen it all, from Japan to Indy ball in Tijuana and Long Island, and he has a great viewpoint on his unique career.
MLB Trade Rumors | Anthony Franco: To cap off the news, how about a former Yankee update? Our old friend Luis Cessa has been trying to return to the major leagues since he was traded to the Reds in 2021 in conjunction with a Justin Wilson salary dump, and he finally flamed out in 2023. This year, he was released on June 1st after logging a 3.89 ERA in 31.1 innings with Triple-A Omaha. Now, Cessa has hooked on with the Pirates, joining their Triple-A club in Indianapolis. His goal is to return to the major leagues.
