ESPN report: J.T. Realmuto says he regrets ever joining phillies amids constant injury……
Following the star catcher’s knee surgery, the Phillies may choose to look into these options if they choose to enlist outside assistance.
For supporters of the Philadelphia Phillies and the team itself, the news on Tuesday was devastating.
Famous catcher J.T. Realmuto had surgery on his right knee and was put on the 10-day injured list. He will be sidelined for at least four weeks, if not more, following the knee meniscectomy that is set for this Wednesday in Philadelphia. The procedure will remove the damaged meniscus from his knee.
The backstop has been enduring it ever since he had to miss three games in May due to knee pain. It seems as though we would arrive here eventually. The Phillies are currently missing what is possibly the most crucial component of the puzzle.
The top catcher in Philadelphia has remained amazingly healthy despite having surgery on the same knee at the end of the 2019 campaign. Since joining the team in2022, backup Garrett Stubbs has made only sporadic appearances. He participated in 50 games during that season, 41 the previous one, and 19 this one.
The Phillies have three outside alternatives to replace J.T. Realmuto.
For the time being at least, the Phillies will rely on Stubbs and Rafael Marchán. Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, stated that they anticipate the star catcher’s absence to last a month. However, what if the absence extends beyond that time and Dombrowski and general manager Sam Fuld decide to search elsewhere for a more suitable replacement?
The Phillies may want to look at these three outside candidates to take Realmuto’s spot in the lineup while he’s sidelined.
Nido Tomás, New York Mets
The division foe New York Mets activated Francisco Alvarez from the 10-day injured list and just designated Tomás Nido for assignment. Following his debut in 2017, the 30-year-old has been playing occasionally in the major leagues.
In 90 plate appearances this season, Nido was slashing.229/.261/.361, but there’s no chance he could ever replace Realmuto. In his brief career, he has amassed three home runs and eight RBI. Compared to Stubbs, who is hitting.179 with a.466 OPS this year, he would be an upgrade at the plate.
With three blocks above average, the seasoned backstop is ranked 12th among qualified catchers defensively. Realmuto is ranked 64th out of 66 catchers, while Stubbs is ranked 53rd. Additionally, he has outperformed both Phillies catchers in terms of framing pitches.
If the Phillies desired a veteran boost over Marchán, Nido would be a cheap, short-term option to play alongside Stubbs until Realmuto returns.
