Dodgers' Manager Dave Roberts Misses Game to Attend Daughter's Graduation – NBC Los Angeles

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that he would not have offered to be interviewed live on television during a major league game if he had still been a player.

However, he doesn’t hold Los Angeles third baseman Kiké Hernández responsible for his Friday night error, which occurred during his second-inning conversation with commentators during the Apple TV+ coverage at Yankee Stadium.

“I know it’s now a part of athletics. Thus, regrettably, Kiké committed a mistake. He has made other mistakes in the past as well,” Roberts stated on Saturday. “I choose my battles, so I won’t do that because it’s a part of sports.”

Hernández conversed with Wayne Randazzo and former major pitcher Dontrelle Willis throughout the broadcast while wearing an earpiece and microphone in his left ear. Willis questioned, “You guys are (a) very close-knit ballclub,” after discussing Hernández’s choice to wear multicolored cleats and the mood at the ballpark. There was one out, no one on, and a 1-2 count on Gleyber Torres. From where does that originate?

When Torres grounded out to third, Willis spoke the words, “After this play.”

Hernández was struck by the ball with his bare right hand, and it bounced off his crotch. Torres had crossed the bag when he got up to toss to first.

At first, Roberts was unaware that Hernández was being questioned while on the job. When asked if he later reviewed the exchange, Roberts replied, “No.” No way, God. There was no shortage of information concerning it.

Furthermore, he does not intend to discuss it with Hernández.

He gets ready. He enjoys the spotlight, I know that. He enjoys using social media, Roberts remarked. “He still practices and plays hard, so I understand, but he also likes to establish his brand. That’s alright with me. He performs to the hilt.

Hernández said, “Maybe a little bit, but I think I let the ball eat me up,” in response to a question following the game about whether the interview had an effect on his play. It hopped in an odd way.

Hernández declared that he would not think twice about doing in-game interviews in the future.

“No, since we receive compensation,” he responded. “Money is something I like.”

According to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, a player who wears a two-way microphone for at least one inning during a regular season game will get a compensation of $10,000. In the postseason, the price increases to $15,000.

If he were playing, Roberts remarked, not even that would change his mind.

“Everyone to their own,” he grinned.

After Trent Grisham singled with two outs, Torres advanced to third, but Jose Trevino grounded out, leaving him stranded. It was Los Angeles 2-1 after 11 innings.

Hernández batted eighth on Saturday night when he returned to the lineup. In the Dodgers’ 11-3 triumph, he hit a home run off New York Yankees starter Nestor Cortes and performed a smart defensive play at third base.
