Kentucky new signee: “We’re going to raise banners in Rupp Arena and win championships.” prepared to “chase No. 9”
“We’re going to raise banners in Rupp Arena and win championships.”
During his news conference upon taking over the Kentucky team almost two months ago, Mark Pope made a statement that reverberated throughout Rupp Arena.
“Winning banners is our goal here.”
Now that his new team has moved to campus, all of the new Cats have shown that they recognize the value of the winning culture the program has built throughout its illustrious past. Lamont Butler, a guard transfer from San Diego State, is the most recent recruit to arrive on campus.
The transfer guard remarks in a tweet published by the official UK men’s basketball account;
“BBN, what’s going on? I flew in from San Diego and just arrived in Lexington. I’m so happy to be here. I’m here because I know the assignment, and I can already feel the love. We intend to chase after number nine, win titles, and raise banners in Rupp Arena.
The updated appearance Kentucky Wildcats are aware of their responsibilities when donning the blue and white jersey. Claiming titles is the aim here. Both the coaches and the players are aware of that task.

Mark Pope during the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, scouting prospects from Kentucky
The newest head coach made the long trip to Argentina to visit with a number of prospects, one of them is Bluegrass native Jasper Johnson.
Even if we haven’t watched Mark Pope play and win yet, it’s obvious that his work and enthusiasm are unquestionable thus far.
Pope has been working tirelessly to assemble a team for the forthcoming season ever since he was hired a few months ago.
Kentucky fans should be happy to know that the work is still going strong. Pope is currently in Argentina to watch a few prospects compete in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup.
Pope even took to social media to share with the world his difficulties in Buenos Aires when operating a stick shift:
Pope is following Team USA, which includes Jasper Johnson, a native of Lexington and one of the nation’s best recruits.
Pope is also present to assess a couple additional Team USA prospects:
The five-star small forward Trey McKenney
Four-star small forward Nate Ament
Four-star small forward Shelton Henderson
Returning to Link Academy, Johnson, a previous standout player for Woodford County, is averaging 7.7 points, three assists, and 1.3 rebounds per game.
With three wins in a row, Team USA has defeated every opponent by an average of fifty points—yes, fifty.
It is impossible to deny the work and commitment, whether or not Pope invites some of these guys to Lexington.
I hope you had a good experience using the stick shift, Coach!
