What's Wrong With Alek Manoah? - Sports Illustrated West Virginia Mountaineers News, Analysis and More

Alek Manoah, the pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, departed the game against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday due to discomfort in his right elbow. He will have an MRI.

Manoah hit a 91.4 mphde sinker to Dominic Fletcher for a ball in the second inning with two outs and a runner on third. Manager John Schneir and a trainer checked on Manoah. They had a brief conversation on the mound, and then the huge right-hander left.

In five starts this season, the 26-year-old Manoah is 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA. Friday night, in a 6-2 loss to Detroit, he was tagged for six runs, four earned, and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Manoah stated on Wednesday night, “I felt it after my start in Detroit and tried to do everything I can with the training staff through the week.” “A few days ago, I threw a bullpen, and it felt okay. I was disappointed that I was unable to participate and give the squad a chance even though I felt like I could.”

Manoah claimed that he had the feeling of “guarding it” until the very end.

“I think mentally when I told myself don’t think about it, I didn’t guard it and I kind of just got more extension than I was the previous pitches,” he said. “It mostly bothers me when I extend.”

Yes, it did feel somewhat constricted. Mentally, I was at a loss at that point—should I keep pushing through and possibly make things worse, or should I just give the ball to someone else?”

A White Sox physician checked Manoah on Wednesday night. His shoulder discomfort put him on the 15-day disabled list at the start of the season.

Schneider stated, “He had some treatment in between, threw a good side here, and was good to go. He was a little cranky after the start in Detroit.” Thus, I believe that we should also strive to exercise some caution there. And in that second inning, (velocity) decreased somewhat.”

In 2022, Manoah emerged as a breakout player for Toronto, going 16-7 in 31 starts with a 2.24 ERA. In the AL Cy Young Award voting, he placed third and was selected to the AL All-Star squad.

However, he had a poor season last year, going 3-9 in 19 starts with a 5.87 ERA. Twice, he was optioned to the minors.

“This is where I am because of God. Manoah remarked, “He’s really helped me get through some tough times.” “I trust that he’ll continue to help me through whatever comes up next.”
