John Collins Carries Jazz Offense Against Rockets

Utah Jazz forward-center John Collins finds himself back where he was as trade whispers intensify.

The big guy is once again the talk of the town after being the subject of much conjecture while he was with the Atlanta Hawks. Utah is “expected to shop” Collins this offseason, according to Forbes Sports’ Evan Sidery, despite the fact that the Jazz only got him last summer.

Collins, a seven-year veteran, averages 15.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game throughout his career. Moreover, he has made 433 3-pointers in his career, shooting 35.8% from beyond the arc. Yes, what sets him apart from many big players is his ability to stretch the floor both vertically and horizontally.

Collins’s services will probably be of interest to a few organizations.

Despite being only 26 years old, he possesses a valuable combination of skills. He’s young enough to be a regular in a rotation yet experienced enough to be regarded as such at that age. Nevertheless, the fact that he is owed $53.2 million over the next two seasons may deter some prospective suitors due to his deal.

Collins’ contract wouldn’t be as big of a hindrance if he were a better shooter or shot-blocker. Having said that, the Hawks were thinking about his 2019–20 season when they signed him to a five-year, $125 million contract in 2021. He shot 40.1 percent from three-point range and averaged 21.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game in his greatest season to date.

Additionally, he was found to have used performance-enhancing substances, which resulted in a November 2019 suspension of 25 games. Naturally, this raised concerns regarding the extent to which Collins’s growth had been natural.

After all, Collins hasn’t contributed nearly as much as an interior defender and has only averaged 15.4 points per game (-6.2 points below his career high) since that season. His lateral mobility is so erratic that how well he defends the perimeter mostly depends on the matchup. Still, the alteration in his supplements might have affected his performance on the inside.

Any team that signs Collins will eventually second-guess their decision. His trajectory is downward, and his contract is an eyesore. He is a liked player by his teammates and is a good player despite his youth.

Given the NBA landscape, Collins may be of interest to teams like the Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets, and Hawks.

We concur with a prominent NBA analyst who thinks the Utah Jazz might make the playoffs this year.

The Utah Jazz might make the playoffs the next year.

We hope that the Utah Jazz are a team that is rising. Much of what occurs next for the club will depend on the front office’s decisions. Will they reach new heights or will their inability to produce consistent talent cause them to fall flat again? It’s anyone’s guess what happens next after selling off high-quality artifacts for very little money for two years running.

However, NBA analyst Rich Bucher thinks the Utah Jazz won’t be at the bottom of the standings for very long. In an interview with JJ and Alex from KSL Sports Zone, Buchere expressed his confidence in Danny Ainge. He says that Ainge trades very conservatively, which means that he thinks a trade made for someone special will be made by Ainge.

Bucher continues, saying:

“I am aware of the Jazz’s experiences over the past two years. This season, I felt that the expectations were a little too high. I think you’ve put enough plans in place, so it’s very feasible that they should make the playoffs again the following season.

After that, it will be a matter of getting those young players into the playoffs and determining which players are truly worth investing in.”

To be honest, we concur with Bucher. The Utah Jazz, in our opinion, are only a couple smart moves away from contending for the playoffs. Not even a Devin Booker-sized deal to the Jazz is being discussed. We’re discussing re-signing Kris Dunn, selecting a guy with immediate impact from the draft, and possibly making a mild deal or signing. Acquiring a sharpshooter through free agency and then potentially making a trade for a defensive-minded player such as Isaac Okoro.

With the development of the core you currently have, along with Collin Sexton and Lauri Markkanen, and yes, this is a club that could easily be the sixth-seed. You make those little moves, not even taking into account what additional rookie prospects the team could receive in this year’s draft.
