LeBron James understands Caitlin Clark’s situation.
The focus is on Clark, the first overall selection in the 2024 WNBA Draft, since she is the driving force behind the movement to change the perception of women’s basketball.
Even though Clark has only played in four WNBA games, the level of attention and popularity she has brought to the league is unprecedented. For the positive influence Clark has already had on the sport, everyone should be applauding her, but instead, she is receiving a great deal of vitriol.
That doesn’t sit well with James.
James talked extensively on the disdain being shown to Clark in a recent episode of his podcast, “Mind the Game,” which he co-hosted with JJ Redick.
“The one thing that I love that she’s bringing into her sport: More people want to watch, more people want to tune in,” added James. “Don’t misunderstand me. Do not screw it up. The WNBA is going to see many amazing things because of Caitlin Clark. However, I don’t believe she should address anything that is being said about her personally. Simply go, enjoy, and have fun.”
James’s kid, who is currently 19 years old, is attempting to get into the NBA. As he goes through this process, Bronny James has come under fire, and he believes there are many parallels between the attention his son is receiving and that of the WNBA player.
“I’m just kind of in this mode right now because I’m getting the same thing from watching my son, who’s a 19-year-old, kind of getting a lot of animosity and hatred towards him when he’s just a kid trying to live out his dream,” James stated. Fewer men and women than you might imagine truly get to fulfill their dream of being professional athletes. And we have tough men and women out here trying their hardest to prevent it from happening. It may be the strangest thing in the world, but that’s how things are. Furthermore, I’m happy Caitlin has a really sharp mind.”
Clark has shown no signs of weakness in the first four games. The 22-year-old has already gifted the supporters with some iconic moments, such as this pull-up 3-pointer: He is averaging 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game.
Just over a month after the WNBA Draft, the Fever are 0-4 but still a very young team that is still getting settled in. In their most recent game, a close defeat to the Connecticut Sun, when Clark hurt her ankle but was able to play again, they demonstrated improvement. Indiana will try to keep up its winning streak against the Seattle Storm on Wednesday night.
Even with all the vitriol that Clark is receiving, at least she knows that James is one of her biggest fans.
When James was selected first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft, there were tremendous expectations placed on him from the start of his career. Those remain the same twenty-one years later. Neither has the hate.
James genuinely cares about Clark’s success and knows exactly what she’s going through.
“I’ve been in that chair before, so I’m cheering for Caitlin. “I hope she kills,” James remarked, adding, “I’ve walked that road before.”
