Just in: Giants close to land in a young talented WR in a blockbuster trade.
This could be a wise addition to Big Blue’s roster.
There hasn’t been a wide receiver for the NY Giants since Odell Beckham Jr. was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019. Big Blue has been plagued by poor draft selections, such as Kadarius Toney, and the failed signing of Kenny Golladay for the past few seasons. In order to remedy this problem, general manager Joe Schoen selected LSU star Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft.
As soon as Nabers enters MetLife Stadium, he ought to be given the highest target rate in the wide receivers room. Still, NY will need to spread the ball around a few guys, with opposition defenses focusing most of their attention on the team’s newest member. Writer Justin Melo of Draft Network believes that Brian Daboll might be a good fit for Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks, according to a recent article. Well, we both agree.
The NY Giants would benefit greatly from adding Treylon Burks with little risk. This offseason, head coach Brian Daboll brought on a number of assistants who know Burks well. The Giants’ tight ends coach, Tim Kelly, was Burks’ offensive coordinator in 2023. Shane Bowen, the defensive coordinator, too took a lateral step. The Giants would stand to gain little by letting Burks save his career if Kelly and Bowen are raving about his skill and/or work ethic.
Burks is a compelling choice for the Giants. Despite being selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2022 draft, the former Arkansas wide receiver has not developed into the star Tennessee had hoped he would be. Despite battling many injuries, he caught 16 passes for 221 yards and no touchdowns in 11 games during the previous season.
In the event that Darius Slayton persists in demanding a contract extension, NY may have to add another receiver. In an attempt to sign a long-term contract, the seasoned Giants wide receiver did not participate in the team’s voluntary offseason program. The holdout might not make it through the regular season, but it’s also conceivable that NY will take a different approach and try to find a replacement in Burks.
Giants supporters are aware that Slayton is not a legitimate WR1, despite the fact that he has led NY in receiving in four of the previous five seasons. The front staff was adamant about picking Nabers since he has a history of drops and is not reliable enough to be Daniel Jones’ main target.
Burks still needs to work on a few things in his game, most notably his durability. He does, however, have a lot of promise and was one of the best wide receivers in his draft class for a reason. If the G-Men decide to move on from Slayton soon, he might be a surprise inclusion.
