Breaking: Keon Ellis named the kings “dawg” of the year.
Do the Sacramento Kings’ players need to be more fiery in the lineup? Henry Turner is adamant that the Kings will succeed in the upcoming season.
Henry Turner, the High Flyer, spoke with The Drive Guys on Thursday about the Sacramento Kings’ 2023â24 campaign. The guys talk about what went wrong with the current team, potential changes, and further anecdotes from Turner’s playing career. Was Keon Ellis the High Flyer’s “dawg” of the year, too?
Sactown Sports has all of that and more.
“I’ll tell you why [Keon Ellis] really showed me a lot, man.” This young man has my utmost admiration because he knows when to pull anything out of the mud and grime. He wasn’t a highly drafted player or a well-known player when he arrived. This person had to go down to the G League and work; he wasn’t the type of guy who came in and said, “Okay, we really want to get this guy look.”

Mike Brown’s upcoming contract with the Sacramento Kings will be impacted by the Lakers’ head coach search: Insider
The impact Mike Brown’s efforts have had on the Sacramento Kings is indisputable. They made their first playoff participation since 2006 under his leadership. Better yet, their performance this season demonstrated that 2023 was not an anomaly, even if they did not make it back to the postseason.
The Kings must consider Brown’s long-term future with the franchise in light of their success with him in the lead role. The Kings have a bad habit of letting good coaches, like Dave Joerger and Mike Malone, leave before it’s time. Given the heights he’s brought them to, that shouldn’t be the case with Mike Brown.
The next head coach the Lakers choose will have an impact on Mike Brown’s contract amount.
When the Kings and Brown negotiate their next deal, a few things will be in play. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Brown’s next contract price will depend on how much the Lakers’ new head coach makes.
“The outcome of the Lakersâ process, and the rest of this unfolding coaching cycle â which has already included paydays for Jason Kidd and new Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer â will also provide added context for Mike Brownâs contract extension conversations in Sacramento,” Fischer said.
Fischer also described the kind of deal that the Kings may offer Brown.
“With Brownâs Coach of the Year credentials and the new benchmarks for coaching salaries after Monty Williams landed $70-plus million from Detroit and (Mike) Budenholzerâs recent $10 million average annual salary, Brownâs talks are expected to center around a similar eight-figure threshold as well.”
Williams’s performance in Phoenix had an impact on his contract, but looking back, Detroit’s choice didn’t seem like a wise one. Head coach Budenholzer has won championships. Though that was back in 2007. Brown has led his team to the NBA Finals.
For someone who has led the Kings to the postseason’s first round, that could seem profitable on the surface. However, it’s also reasonable to argue that Sacramento is just entering a new chapter in its history and that as long as they continue to put their faith in Brown, prosperous times are ahead for them.
Naturally, the Kings must play their cards carefullyâperhaps adding Darvin Ham to Brown’s team, for exampleâbut they have a problem on their hands, and Brown’s contribution to their recent success cannot be understated. All indications point to him being worth the investment, albeit he will have to demonstrate this first.
